Steamed brussels sprouts are both delicious and easy to cook. They’re great for adding to casseroles or tossed with butter, salt & pepper.

This version is one that my mom always made when we were kids. Simple steamed (or even boiled) brussels sprouts topped with a crispy breadcrumb topping.

An Easy Way to Prepare Brussels Sprouts

  • Brussels can be trimmed and cut in half (if they’re large) up to a week ahead making for an easy side.
  • Steaming brussels sprouts makes them nice and tender while preserving all of the nutrients.
  • The addition of crispy crumbs adds a great toasty flavor making this dish delicious.
  • Other veggies can be steamed with the brussels sprouts to change it up.
  • These are great served with a chicken dinner, next to steaks, or even with roast turkey breast.

Ingredients & Variations

BRUSSELS: Choose raw brussels sprouts that have tight leaves and no brown spots.

The stem should be trimmed and large sprouts can be cut in half. Fresh or frozen Brussels will work.

PANKO: This brussels sprouts recipe calls for crispy Panko bread crumbs. These are Asian-style breadcrumbs that have a little bit of a lighter and crispier crumb. These crumbs can easily be found in the Asian aisle of the supermarket or the spices section.

VARIATIONS: Can’t find Panko bread crumbs? Try making a homemade version with this Breadcrumbs recipe.

Add crumbled bacon bits or even toss with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice or balsamic vinegar before adding the bread crumbs. Fresh herbs can be sprinkled overtop if desired.

How to Steam Brussels Sprouts

  1. Trim the end off of the brussels sprouts and remove outer leaves that are discolored.
  2. If the Brussels are large, they can be cut in half (per the full recipe below).
  3. Place a steamer insert in a large pot and add about an inch of water (so it isn’t touching the steamer basket).
  4. Bring the water to a boil and reduce to a simmer. Cover and steam brussels sprouts 5-7 minutes or until fork tender.
  5. Toss with the breadcrumbs as directed in the full recipe below.

Optional additions include a little bit of garlic powder or a sprinkle of parmesan cheese in the crumb mixture.

If using frozen brussels sprouts, steam about 7-8 minutes or until heated through.

Storing Leftovers

Have some leftovers? Place them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.

To reheat, place brussels on a sheet pan with a little bit of olive oil and bake at 350°F for 8-10 minutes or until heated through. They can also be reheated in the air fryer or in a skillet on the stovetop.

These Brussels can easily be frozen (except for Brussels that were originally frozen). They will keep in the freezer for 12 months. Let them thaw in the refrigerator.
